The 613 Commandments of HaShem our God

Let's discuss this on my Blog!

The 613 Commandments of HaShem our God.

Rabbi and noted medical doctor Moses ben-Maimon (also known as "Maimonides" and Rambam: Born Passover Eve 1135 C.E. and died in Egypt (or Tiberias) on 20th Tevet, December 12, 1204) was a preeminent medieval Jewish philosopher and one of the greatest Torah scholars and physicians of the Middle Ages. His carefully calculated list of the 613 biblical Commandments is still generally accepted as authoritative today although other approaches do exist. Among his other achievements is the listing of Thirteen Principles which all Jews should accept.

When looking over the 613 Commandments there are a couple of things to bear in mind. This is Rambam's attempt to categorize and present the 613 commandments as they appear in the Bible. Many of these commandments can not be performed today because the Holy Temple is not standing (yet) and other requisite conditions no longer exist. Likewise some these commandments have been modified by Cohen Gadol Y'shua (our "High Priest" and Mediator) and hence are not applicable to Messianic Jews (much of kashrut or kosher laws for instance). The 613 Commandments need to be considered within the context in which they apply.

Also, the layout of this page draws heavily from the always excellent Judaism 101 website list. In time this page will be updated to include information specifically relevant to Messianics and so should be considered a work in process.
